603 - Brief 05 - Artist Research

I considered some of my favourite illustrators at the current time and thought about how I would try and let their practise influence my own..

Stephanie Cahyadi

- She makes use of block coloured sections, which similar to Mason London, are detailed by the lines she puts in afterwards - it is an accurate representation of the scene however the fluidity of the lines and patterns used on certain surfaces still give the piece that sketchy style
- What makes her stand out is the experimentation of colour through her work - she applies vivid colour schemes, following a reasonably strict scheme, but applies these to her work in usual ways - such as blue floors and green hair. This reflects the scene very well but puts it into this alternate reality allowing her to dictate the mood of the piece through her colour decisions.

Tom Haugomat

I have always been a huge fan of Tom Haugomat's work - his experimentation with perspective, light and shadow really brings his interior works to life. Allowing the piece to stem from the light coming from a window to project light and shadow onto the rest of the scene. His use of colour and texture make his work feel almost retro-vintage yet very sharp and digital at the same time.

Mason London

Mason London is my favourite illustrator at the moment as his work is detailed, yet delicate; considered yet relevant and intriguing to the viewer.
I am especially inspired by his monthly flyer designs for NTS Radio were he created a visual narrative following a guy in his new flat. Showing how the space adapts and changes over time as it is lived in by young people.

His style is second to none, using big blocks of colour (often quite textured - looks almost hand-rendered) which create contrast in themselves to create the basic outline of the image and then he adds the simple detailing through fluid line drawing. He doesn't use much shadow but it is not needed as he creates the perspective of the piece perfectly without. I am also particularly inspired by his lyric video for Cadenza - where he features the artist sat in a few different scenes, yet the lyrics keep building up around him in each scene on relevant objects - posters / bits and bobs / text messages and tweets / neon signs in the bar.

I aim to push my illustration style in a familiar yet slightly new and experimental style for Secret 7 this year and see what I can come up with!
