OUGD404: Studio Brief 02 - Cover Experiments

Cover Experiments

I know I want the cover to include a desaturated image of Troxler to suggest the content of the magazine to the readers without the use of too much type on the cover. It seemed fitting to title the publication 7" reflecting the vinyl size and the publication size.
I played with the numbers form paired with " also trying physically writing out 'Seven Inch'.

It became obvious quickly that I wanted a border around the cover image..

I came to the conclusion that this image would not be suitable for my cover because I stated I wanted to use minimal type on the cover, but it appears very unclear what the mag is about from the current experiments. You would not be able to identify with this magazine being a music/lifestyle driven magazine from this cover. So I started using different imagery to depict Troxler actually DJing to catch the attention of the right audience.

I started to try and think more towards the communicating the 7" vinyl reference and began to consider the acetate concept - having an extra leaf of acetate which is present over the cover which would have the type on it and also would protect the magazine..

I developed the idea into having a vinyl outline on the acetate over the cover, with the title and features being on the centre of the vinyl..

I quickly mocked the idea up on CAD using the new imagery to depict Troxler..

I do not feel like the two match together, so will not be proceeding with this idea. As I will be using such minimal amounts of type on the cover it is not worth having the extra acetate film, it is unjustifiable.
I went back to the original kind of concept trialled with a more interactive image reflecting the content of the magazine a bit more...

I especially like the second one due to its simplicity but effectiveness. The '7"' fits into the space created by the image.
