OUGD404: Studio Brief 02 - The Cover

The Cover

I saw some very intriguing examples of the route I could take with the cover of my magazine, the obvious minimal lifestyle mag cover..

This example was an editorial within the MKI shop in Leeds, a very high-end fashion supplier with some very nice textured stocks used..

The next is an acrylic cover, which has been laser cut out allowing the image beneath to seep through..

The College mag, Nest, features a very nice overlay cover which leaves a space for the logotype to sit but also allowing half of the cover image to be visible.. (more detailed blog post looking at it labelled OUGD402 & OUGD404 (under the PPP section))

This has again been developed into a fashion lookbook, with an transparent acetate type material. Could contain the title and article headings or geometrics making up part of the picture as shown beneath..

I then came across this squared publication example on instagram again...

Like the spiral binding, it does appear to be common in a lookbook styled publication but again I questioned why I can't use it for my editorial! As I started to research into it a realised this ties perfectly in with my concept of dance music related editorial as it could be inspired by 7 or 12" vinyls...

It turns out, there already is an editorial on the market named 'Sqaure' which is a web publication dedicated to the square photographic format. Square Magazine is a quarterly published in 4 languages, free to read and to contribute to...

Looking at the editorial possibilities of a squared publication, I am interested in experimenting with the different grids and margins, etc that I can use within this scale! I considered trying to produce the editorial 12"x12" to reflect the size of a full record, but looking at the resolutions of the images I already have lined up for use in the content, it would be too large. Therefore I have decided to scale down to 7"x7" as records are still available (not as popular however) at this scale. This way images should be of enough quality and also the double page spread will be able to fit on an A3 sheet, making printing more accessible and easy!
