OUGD406: SECRET 7 - Idea Generation

Initial Idea Generation
23 / 02 / 16

I was naturally attracted to Max Richter - Dream 3 simply because of the opportunity to experiment with more surreal styled artworks portraying the free world of dreaming and all its abstract potential.
Looking into the artist Richter is a British ambient composer whose album 'SLEEP' - is 8 hours long and is meant to be representative of an average nights rest. It is intended to send the listener to sleep and is described as an '8 hour lullaby' ... 'for a frenetic world'
frenetic - fast and energetic in a rather wild and uncontrolled way.
'A manifesto for a slower pace of existence'

This initially gave me a lot of scope for my ideas and immediately decided I did want to experiment with marbling inks as it is a practise I have wanted to re-visit for a while now. The fluidity and colour produced by the inks are definitely something I want to pair with photography. I had the idea to experiment with photographing a female model, but appearing to be suspended - hair dangling and arms, and then incorporate the dribbling marbling ink patterns coming down off the body in Photoshop. This would represent the concept of lucid dreaming and would allow me to produce psychedelic and abstract designs.

The inspiration came from a figurative artist whose work I have been fond of for a while, Mark Demsteader uses life models. His figurative drawings often depict the head, thorough in detail, and paying careful attention to every attribute on the subject’s face. The rest of the image is left experimental as he abstracts the figure into merely a few lines, leaving the canvas seemingly unfinished. In contrast to his drawings, Demsteader paintings do not have open space and are filled with rich textures, bold colour, and heavy movement. His figures are very soft, delicate creatures, which are placed in a harsh, often overbearing backgrounds – adding an alluring sense of mystery to each piece.
I love this unfinished concept and the rest of the body being depicted through lines and abstract dribbles, with the textures and colours piercing through to create various moods. Pairing this concept with marbling inks could prove effective. Examples...

I continued mapping my initial ideas so I had various possible pathways to take with the project and that way, I could get feedback in the crit session on which people think are my strongest routes to pursue...

Whilst sat thinking about all associated with dreams and sleep, being a student I came up with the idea of pairing the design generation with something I had heard about off a friend. Dream Herbs are something which result in extremely profound and vivid dreams and my friend who has tried them before says he remembered his dream as if it actually happened to him. I had the idea to put the track on whilst I was sleeping and then give these dream herbs a try and then when I wake up, try and remember and write down my experience and produce my artwork off this. I understand it is an idea which not everyone will agree with so I will take it to the crit and see what kind of opinions I get on it!!

My last initial idea concept for the Dream 3 track was thinking about the view of when you first wake up and open your eyes and experiment with what different people may get to see. Then I can experiment with photography techniques, i.e. wide angles and fish eyes, and also over exposure and blur to reflect the struggle of first opening your eyes in the morning.
The inspiration came from an article I saw online of a Russian photographer who captured his breathtaking morning views from his tent every morning when out hiking.. http://www.boredpanda.com/morning-views-from-the-tent-mountain-photography-oleg-grigoryev/
