Going back through my blogs, I realised I had forgotten to produce my blogged response to this Study Tasks which took place on 1st December. To aid the development of our designs for the small publication we looked at the use of folds in a range of publications and how they can aid the aesthetics and functionality of certain publications, leaflets, etc within graphic design.
The first example is Festival Breda's publication about the Graphic Design Festival Breda 2010. They have folded the front cover at an angle and printed an image on the other side to create a geometric effect that highlights the word 'decoding' ambiguously. This concept could be used on the back cover also and could be used to reveal elements on the following page.
Whilst browsing for inspiration and examples on sites like designspiration.net and pinterest.com I came across many folded designs such as the two beneath, they really highlight the complexity of the folding and the wide range of experimentation available within publication layout design. My own publication will only consist of a few pages in comparison, however, I could experiment with the main cover fold used in the second one.
Fold Factory provide a quality service that offers printing and folds to purchase online. The Broadside Reveal Brochure fold is a folding technique I simply found on the website, which is super-easy to create but leaves you with a very attractive/complex looking brochure design which you can adapt yourself for various purposes...

The website lists it as follows, "a tri-fold with a twist. With asymmetrical broadside folding applied to the exterior of the brochure, we have created a horizontal reveal and lots of extra real estate for content that can be hidden when folded.
Uses:
Special Events
Marketing Brochure
Promotion
Maps and Information
Newsletters"

For the study task we had to produce an A4 Black & White guide to producing a folded publication.
I created my guide for the Broadside Reveal Brochure fold mentioned above. From creating the folded piece myself I was able to create a 2D net on screen with very simplified instructions to aid the user.
This study task has been helpful as it has made me aware of the endless options of experimentation you can take with folding and how I could use them in my own publications...
