This is when I started playing with a more surrealist style of work - allowing a never ending sci-fi Tron inspired grid set the scene.

Thought about how I could best add to this and make it personal to my own style, and what better way than to draw and animate us (the DJs) onto the poster!
I am constantly trying to develop my illustration style and one person who always inspires me to push my process is illustrator/animator Mason London...
His work is made up of block (usually pastel-y and textured) colour, which is then refined with linear detailing but no shadows. It is quite a quick process in comparison to styles which go into great detail with shadowing and gradients..

Started off with the initial line drawing, and then began the process of adding the colour.
I planned to animate this, very subtly by just having him toke on the cigar so the cherry lights up and then smoke would rise up..
My peers and the DJ loved this idea - but the square surrealist backdrop needed balancing out with another piece of illustration/animation to feature opposite. This is where I decided to incorporate myself into the stream - and make use of the beer gif I made as part of my email handler for my personal branding..
The two drawings fitted together perfectly..

I decided to use 'Peace Sans'.

- a free, extra bold, rounded font made with love.
The font is very well-balanced with a friendly and open visual presence. It is beautifully crafted and works really well on bold heading lines overlaying other content because of its strong form. Creates the perfect contrast with the vibrant gradients used on this flyer.
I hollowed out the centre of the AV8 logo to let the background come through more.
Also considering how I can have the smaller typographical content switching over to bring it life that little bit more and also include more of the necessary info for the stream.
With Frazah's evolving music genre too - going from UK Bass to more commercial DnB, I needed to ensure the title was spot on too..

Ended up changing it from Disco Disco, to Disco Bass, to Disco n DnB to make sure I was catering for both genres of music being played on the night.

Outcome: animated

- Created the back and forth motion of the written info

- Spinning AV8 logo
- Beer Cheers Gif
- Frazah smoking
- Took the transitioning of the border to the next psychedelic level!
- Warped the lines to create a crazy flower/mandala pattern in the sky and then mirrored on the ground.
- Creating that extra wow-factor to engage the audience between the loops.
