OUGD406: Exhibition Branding - Initial Identity Development

Initial Identity Development

Before I started the experiments with colour on a mock up of a flyer, we needed to come together as a group and decide on the other features of the design to ensure we can all work within similar styles. Then we said once we all had some responses we could come back together and pick out bits to change to ensure consistency throughout all our proposal.

That started with the the direction of typeface that we wanted to go in.. sans-serif to reflect modernity, quality and efficiency
Or - serif and calligraphy styled typefaces to reflect the traditional roots behind what the exhibition is all about and to reflect class and official-ness!

We all agreed we would initially restrict ourselves to the use of Garamond. This we said would most likely be updated later but for now we needed something to represent our name in an official but more traditional manor, as the whole exhibition is around the future of our currency but through traditional processes.

"Modern mindsets pushing traditional processes"

Now we can all go away and develop our ideas independently but hopefully in a more consistent style through type and colour. But at this stage we do just want to all propose our initial ideas with how to push the concept and then focus down onto one of our ideas and maybe try and combine specific features to provide the strongest response for our concept.

We re-assigned some group roles so we could each start developing different sections (some overlapping) so we get a variety of different responses. This involved me focusing onto the identity and how we might layout the flyer designs to advertise the exhibition. Sophie and Calum started looking into the actual exhibition space whilst also developing their ideas of how they wanted the identity to look. Katie started some invite designs going off our discussion of basing them on cheque books you get from banks, Aneta was looking at possible way-finding. Harisson was away for this session so we got hold of him through our facebook group chat set up asking him to start looking into identity and social media! The facebook was set up so we could have a quick and easy way to communicate about our visual ideas, and a platform to plan our meetings, etc. We put all this into place just so we could start building this concept in time for our initial presentation/proposals to the tutors first.

To get closer to my concept I started to think of how I could incorporate certain pattern designs to reflect luxuriousness and wealth, etc. As in big mansions on films and in our concept inspiration the Hong Kong Bankers Club, they all feature expensive marble floors and surfaces. So I started researching into these luxurious patterns and how I could recreate them to liven up the poster/flyers and give more depth to the concept..

All of these pattern designs would be interesting to recreate and I played with a couple of the designs, looking at how I could work it into a luxurious colour scheme. But then I chose to try and create something fresh and new which could feature in all promotional material, etc for the exhibition. A simple repeated pattern design whose structure and strong edges, paired with the right colour scheme can add to this luxurious and exclusive design we are going for..

First design attempt

This was my final design that I created to try and represent the concept. Next I wanted to push it into a flyer layout design to see how it could all work together as now it appears too busy and overwhelming to look at alone. It would need to be present in the right place to add colour balance and a classy feel to the design.

I gathered some various layout examples to inspire my initial concepts..

From these layout examples I can combine the strongest ideas from each and then develop my concept into it for my initial experiments. Then I can just keep developing it with our groups agreed aesthetic characteristics.
I trialled colours from the colour palette to find the best results from our chosen options..

The dark greys truly were too dark, so I used the lighter shades instead to provide the main base for text and information. The main background looked strongest as an off white/cream colour as it was just toned down and lightened from the main gold colour I sampled, these complement eachother nicely giving the luxurious feel, but I think the grey counter-acts this and isn't striking enough for what we wanted to represent.

I liked the contrast the brown-y colour creates and it does match the gold and cream better in my opinion. But this is something I will have to take back to the group. I have mocked the page layout up with some reference to location and event info but this will need to all be added in and confirmed later.

I took a different approach, trialling a longer design which would make a further use of the cream and gold colour scheme whilst only featuring bits of the darker grey as accents in the logo so I could see if it would work in different layouts differently..

I also thought about how we could communicate the idea of including a more interactive section of the exhibition for people to get involved and design their own bank-note and also leave feedback/have a competition?!
