603 - Brief 06 - Visual Research 1

I started to consider various visual research as to how we would further communicate the justifications through image / illustration.

Daniel Avery's New Album

Very ambiguous
- reflective of the quick-moving, often very blurry club night experiences
- slight time-lapses causes the light to trail reflective of the low-lighting and energy in a nightclub.
- whilst at the same time very neon from the various lighting and projections.

- strong red colour throughout invokes assertiveness, being daring, determined, energetic, powerful, enthusiastic, being impulsive, exciting, and aggressive. Red represents physical energy, lust, passion, and desire. It symbolises action, confidence, and courage.
- The colour red is an intense colour that is packed with emotion ranging from passionate, intense love to anger and violence — representing both cupid and the devil. It is a hot, strong, stimulating colour that represents excitement and energy. Studies show that the colour red can create physical effects such as elevated blood pressure, enhanced libido, increased respiratory rates, enhanced metabolism, increased enthusiasm, higher levels of energy, and increased confidence.
The colour red is a highly visible colour that is able to focus attention quickly and get people to make quick decisions, which is one of the reasons fire trucks and fire engines are usually painted red.

All of the above are moods and feelings which can be portrayed through a single experience dancing in a club and getting lost with the dance music that is being played.
Applies this attention-grabbing mood across all of his outputs.

- Making use of a grainy, scanned-in textured gradient which is quite an abstract representation of the emotions captured within the music.

- This has been partnered with Eurostile funnily enough - showing how the bold form fits this very grainy and impactful aesthetic - feels vintage-y and 90s-esque, it is very technical and industrial because of its squared form yet is very legible and memorable.

Shows how a combination of bold text can then be complimented by the same type, but outlined, so it is just as impactful and consistent yet slightly toned down from the main Heading. Still providing that necessary contrast from the vibrant texture.

Applicable and consistent across all of his album outcomes..

Can be easily mixed up and altered, yet still recognisable and consistent to the original identity
- perfect for use for sample E.Ps before the release of the whole album\
- or for extended / exclusive editions of the album after it drops.

- Can carry this forward into very glitchy and grainy / white-noise territory.. reflecting this digital glitch style so popular in todays market whilst still referencing the now-appreciated imperfections of past processes.

Devin Wilson - digital album art designer heavily influenced by collage and the imperfections created by scanning in and mix-matching various elements.

His development work for Bravestation's new album:

Very collage inspired, bold contrast created through the dark silhouettes, then accentuated by the use of a single vibrant colour - to enhance the mood and impact.

- he scans in elements from old books and magazines to create this obscure compositions.

- Partners this with bold and charismatic typefaces which give off a certain vibe through the vintage style, and condensed letterforms.

Feels vintage and grungy through the process and composition, yet references the digital and modern-world through the its elements.
Scratchy and imperfect style
- is expressive and thought-provoking

Strong example of distressed type and how it can infer certain moods though the monochromatic and grainy photography.
Big type in a simple layout - creates contrast and grabs your attention -  very impactful and clear.
