505 - 2 - Colour Consideration

By re-visiting the illustrations I felt initially inspired by, we decided from the crit session that experimentation with a colour scheme was essential to provide depth to the illustrations as well as supporting my chosen tone of voice and message (including possible experimentation with drawing with shadows rather than outlines).
Not to mention, this is what would make the campaign recognisable and consistent in the long run, attracting the attention of a broader audience when online or printed/on digital billboards out and about.

From some of my favourite pieces by my favourite illustrators I devised a colour scheme board
Focusing on which colours compliment eachother best whilst reflecting this more pastel-y, stark style.

I considered how these illustrators do literally draw with the shadows and provide the perspective and dimensions that way - I attempted this in my experimentation with my colour scheme, however struggled portraying some of the longer shadows, but I was still extremely happy with how I was able to consider this and see it within my own response.

Instead I experimented with the use of gradients in the different shapes and surfaces within the room.
This simple technique added a hell of a lot of realism to my drawings and provided that missing depth that the shadows and light did not fully provide...
I trialled a very strict colour scheme, to keep each of the illustrations consistent to one and other even when not alongside eachother.

This revolved around a pastel-y light green, which is then complimented by a darker green for its shadows, and then a dark grey for the shadows ontop of that! Partnered with a contrasting orange and blue to provide some variation for the eye, and draw attention to the various aspects of the illustration.
Cremes, browns and yellows were incorporated quite sparingly too, this provided contrast for the skin tones and hair colour.
I did try and enhance shadows and perspective as much as I can to provide the most depth and sophistication for the illustrations, hopefully I was successful with this!

Reflecting our loss of the ability to empathise, even when out in public for a romantic meal. Have social media feeds replaced social interaction?

"Look up, you might miss it"

Reflecting an anti-social breakfast, the loss of social interaction again.

"Mute your headphones, experience the now"

Reflecting how our generation would rather be trapped indoors staring at a screen all day, than actually going out and being productive.

"Break free from time to time"

With the rise of technology has came the obsession with documenting and sharing everything.

"Turn it off and you really will feel connected"

Reflecting how we are never actually alone.

"Turn it off, to switch you off"

Feedback:

"The series is consistent in colour and style, and the relationship between technology and human is made well clear."

"Excellent link between the concept and the illustrations, very professionally put together and the clever use of bold contemporary colour helps set the tone for each animated scene, very impressive!"
