"We chose to use animals as visual metaphors, that are also recognisable based on aspects of their appearance."
- very clean and quite a basic response. It is very punchy and eye catching through the colours and typography used.

"The inspiration for my design is the current collaboration Edinburgh University has with NASA. The Robot depicted here is the Valkyrie which is held at the school of Informatics."
"I chose to use this subject as I wanted to highlight the interconnected qualities of Edinburgh University."
"I hope that this design will show prospective students that by choosing to study here they are opening their horizons outward to a multifaceted intellectual community."
- a more refined sketchy style used, appropriate to the specs of the uni. Feel like the typography used could be more eye-catching and used more as a technique of communication and feeling.

"To appeal to prospective design students, I needed to create a consistent brand. I took inspiration from a design style that I have never experimented with before, but one that I absolutely adore – Swiss typography."
"I wanted to represent the historical and educational aspects of the course, having been exposed to Swiss typography and its influential designers through lectures and seminars focusing on the history of graphic communication."
"So, feeling inspired particularly by the likes of Josef Müller-Brockmann, I created a minimalist, primarily typographic design following a grid structure which is so commonly seen in Swiss typography."
- my favourite response, the most design considered. I would be drawn to this as a young designer looking for a uni to develop my skills.
Need to consider how the audience will all be at different levels of design - some very basic, some more advanced - so it needs to appeal to all portraying clean design approach but not too complicated and over-whelming for future under-grad students as the transition to uni can often be a intimidating one.
THE JUDGES -
As far as I am aware, they do not provide any specific information about the judges involved in the competition other than "a 4-man panel made up of graphic designers and design professionals from Display Wizard."
So I'm going to do a bit of individual research into the company and some of their in-house designers to try and gain a bit more of an insight.
DISPLAY WIZARD (as a company) -
Display Wizard was founded in 2004 and since then has grown steadily to become one of the most reputable companies in the display and exhibition industry. The dream at the company’s formation was to offer personalised, high-quality display solutions that would help other businesses to promote themselves more effectively.

- Online there was not much more information regarding the judges or preferred design styles/ approach for the brief. So I will try and see this as a positive thing - allowing me to really develop my response freely, but with obvious considerations for the audience the banner will actually be aimed at - possible visiting future students, the general visiting public; aswell as the students already studying at Leeds College of Art - as I need it to be an accurate and likeable representation of the uni and its family inside.
I tracked down the designer who came 3rd place last year on Behance - https://www.behance.net/gallery/40467577/Display-Wizard
This was my favourite out of the 3 being a strong typographical response, I dropped her a message regarding the feedback she received from DW and if she had any advice regarding my approach for it..

I immediately got a response back:
Her reply encourages me to be as bold and conceptual as I can with my entry. Really focus on what justifies the design decisions I make.
Also how I need to be extra concise when working with the templates they provided to ensure I am fitting the requirements - a mistake she made which may have lead to her deduction from 1st to 3rd!
She adds how DW are actually quite a small company, she met all of them when on an internship with them and how they are all friendly fair minded designers who appreciate well thought out designs with strong justifications.
I aim to create an engaging and conceptual response to the brief, one which accurately and proudly represent my beliefs in LCA as a top Art College - it will be nice to represent Leeds as a creative city through a piece of signage/banner design.

As this is my substantial brief, I'll conduct research into LCA and the city of Leeds to ensure I am justifying my work and allowing it to be an accurate insight.
One of last year’s winning students, Michael Jackson, said of the competition:
“This was a great brief to work on that provided a lot of scope for creativity. Winning the competition and undertaking the internship has been a great experience for me personally and should aid my professional career going forward.”
As I have numerous deadlines coming up straight after Easter I thought it would be a good idea to create a bit of a timeplan for me to try and follow with my work to ensure more structure, allowing me to bounce between projects better and keep ideas fresh.

PPP and 505 are both in a few weeks later in May so i will schedule them in later
The deadline for this actual competition is in May
Module submission is 27/4/17
As I have left starting this quite late in comparison to when we were briefed the overall module, I am going to be efficient with my time management.
