504 - Design for Screen - Initial Considerations

I have to create an immersive and engaging screen based user experience for a media of my choice, this could include; website, app, streaming service, title sequence, ident's, onscreen graphic overlays, etc.

For this brief I should clearly identify
- the client
- the problem
- the target audience
- the over-arching aim of my project

How can I maximise the potential of digital devices and deliver a world class digital experience?
Need to design at a global scale - this must inform decisions

We will be receiving talks from local design studio 'Only' and getting involved in some crit sessions with them, etc.

"Overload, clutter and confusion are not attributes of information, they are failures of design." - Edward R. Tufte

I will start properly considering both User Interface and User Experience in my design process resulting in a more focused and tested outcome.

UX
User experience design is the process of enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty by improving the usability, ease of use, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the customer and the product. UX design is responsible for being hands on with the process of research, testing, wire-framing, development, content, and prototyping to test for quality results. The designers also go through a number of steps of research which include:

- The process they go through to discover your company’s product
- The sequence of actions they take as they interact the interface
- The thoughts and feelings that arise as they try to accomplish their task
- The impressions they take away from the interaction as a whole

Wireframing Example

As UX focuses on user experience, and how they feel for interaction, I thought of some good examples, the Match of The Day Intro song or the start up sound for your game console!

UI
User Interface design, specifically focuses on the design of interactive elements, and as such is predominantly found within digital media, such as on a computer, tablet or smartphone. Interactive elements such as drop down menus, form fields, clickable elements, animations, button styling and more are all critical tools for UI designers around the world.
As such, we can understand the meaning of UI design as building upon and expanding the Graphic Design definition, inasmuch as it relates to the way the things we use and interact with look.

"UX is focused on the user’s journey to solve a problem, UI is focused on how a product’s surfaces look and function"

Background / Considerations

In identifying and developing your outcome the production decisions should inform, direct and enhance your overall design treatment. You should consider the following:

- The processes and procedures involved in designing for screen.
- The relationship between designer and developer.
- The role and skill set of the developer (and where you would find a developer to work with)

- Research - what already exists in the design field, how innovative can you be
These considerations should be documented on your blog and design boards.

Mandatory Requirements
- To show a good understanding of design for screen through documented and ongoing design and development.
- My content should demonstrate an understanding of design for screen, which includes but is not restricted to layouts, usability, and designing for my audience.
- My finished product should show an understanding of the role of a graphic designer in screen-based delivery, as well as demonstrating industry standard requirements.
- Correct labelling of my work on my blog is essential. Failure to organise my work clearly will affect the assessment of my work.
Deliverables
- Blog
- Detailed wireframes/prototypes and mockups
- Where possible working/animated/navigable prototypes
- Design boards and blog posts, which articulate a thorough and informed approach to the brief. These must include; clearly written/interpreted brief, research, idea generation, development, and production.
Interpretations of the brief

Past briefs have really had me studying the more practical side to graphic design and getting to know these more traditional processes including bookmaking and screenprinting. I now look forward to and think very openly about exploring the now very current and evolving digital side to graphic design; this will also allow me to revisit After Effects after a longtime and start developing my motion graphic/animation skills! The brief is very open, allowing me to shape the brief how I see will develop and interest me the most.
