503 - Individual Practise - Live Briefs Options

For this module we are required to work towards one larger brief provided by the likes of D&AD, YCN, etc.. but we also need to get involved with 2 smaller briefs aswell. Today I properly starting introducing myself to the various smaller brief options I have, my most popular contenders being the Penguin Student Design Awards and also Secret 7 which I will discuss further. These briefs will help me demonstrate my ability to develop effective responses within professionally realistic deadlines.

Secret 7 is a live competition brief which we were all involved in last year through the module 406. It involves designing a 7" record sleeve for one of 7 popular tracks/classics from that year. It was one of my favourite briefs of last year due to the freedom of experimentation with how I can represent a track and the different levels and processes I can go into; however the tracks do not get released until early February so I will focus on another brief first and save this one for afterwards.
The comp works in the sense of each track getting pressed 100 times to 7” vinyl. Then it is an open invitation for creatives around the world to interpret the tracks in their own style for every 7”. 700 sleeves are exhibited and then sold for £50 apiece at a final exhibition, last year in Shoreditch, London. You don’t know who created the sleeve, or even which song it’s for, until you have parted with your cash - "the secret lies within."

The Penguin Random House Student Design Award is an opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in design to experience real cover design briefs first-hand. It gives young creatives like me a chance to chance to win a work placement within the Penguin Random House Design Studios, as well as £1,000 in prize money and a lot of exposure to the industry.
To make the process even more similar to the way their designers work in-house, once the judges have selected the shortlist, the Art Directors will give the shortlisted entrants feedback and further art direction on their submissions. Shortlisted entrants will then be invited to resubmit their work, taking on board all the comments, before the final round of judging.
All entries must be submitted digitally via a link which will be available on the site from Wednesday 18 January 2017.  The closing date for entries is 12:00 (GMT) on Tuesday 7 March 2017.

Adult Fiction Cover - To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee‘Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ’em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.’
A lawyer’s advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee’s classic novel – a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man’s struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much.

Adult Non-Fiction Cover - In Cold Blood: A True Account of a Multiple Murder and Its Consequences by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood is regarded by many critics as the pioneering work in the true crime genre. It is a startling, true account of a gruesome crime and a skilfully researched piece of journalism – it is a literary masterpiece brilliantly imagined which reads like the most gripping of thrillers.
