Here are the final designs for the poster series..
The posters will be printed A3 on 200gsm matte stock ready to be hung up!
Overall, I do feel as if I have had to rush this brief due to time restraints with my deadlines. So time management has become something that I have learnt to consider more thoroughly for next year. Although I do feel as if I have produced a considered, acceptable and appropriate response to the brief and have met my own aims as stated initially.
The poster series is aesthetically simplistic and inspired by modernism giving the new students a taste of the variety of what they can be designing now they're here. I have considered form following function in the sense that I have stripped back my design to most clearly and effectively communicate to these freshers my personal pointers on specific aspects that will make their transition into this art college an easier one. The simplicity of the design aims not to overwhelm them with graphic design but to ease them in more comfortably.
I feel I have made it appropriate for the new students through the use of colour, the variety is initially attention grabbing and gives off a very approachable feel when paired with the typography. The colour does attempt to reflect each course-mate used in a witty/more personal way but is also aimed to be more co-ordinated with each message given and the mood of that message, e.g. feeling 'blue' being the most obvious one.
I have made use of a typeface called Perfectly Amicable for the outer margins of the poster as it is thick enough to sit on an A3 white background and still be readable, especially through its consistent and clear sans-serif form. For the main type I decided on a typeface called CocoGoose which again provides a very clean, legible, readable sans serif typeface. It is a lot more rounded and broad however, which makes it feel more approachable to viewers and provides a strong a contrast to the background of the face behind it! The use of the underlining of certain words does add stress on the way you read it, adding to the mood. Although I have had some comments suggesting it was unnecessary to the design, but as it is consistent on each, I feel it is justified and adds a nice effect!
I have considered tone of voice aiming to use quite loose language which the new students, aged 18-23 typically, so they should engage with this. This is through the use of sarcasm, humour and swear words. I hope it does read well with them and allows them to feel comfortable quicker with their new environment.
