Stefan Sagmeister
I follow Sagmeister on Instagram and on a daily basis he uploads a picture of four album covers to his feed, I'm not sure whether or not this is current project he's working on, or perhaps it could be the records he listens to during the day in the studio. Nonetheless, the constant feed of album cover designs can help with my research for this brief because he always credits the designer or artist in the description so to see other notable designers music related work can influence my designs.
Storm Thorgerson
This artist stood out to me as through listening to the albums myself it has shown me that the design is more intricate to the style of music and the message of the album. This highlights the importance of understanding the music you are designing the cover for. On the other hand it could be interesting to experiment with ideas before looking into the song in more detail? Very surrealist, through photography.
To develop my practise further I knew my next experimentations would be with ink marbling to create psychedelic patterns and effects. I decided to look back at some of Leif Podhajsky's work, as he is if not the most influential psychedelic album artwork artist..
Leif Podhajsky
His work explores themes of connectedness, the relevance of nature and the psychedelic experience. By utilizing these subjects he attempts to inspire the viewer into a realignment with themselves and their surroundings. His use of geometrics and mirroring within his work are styles that I will play with.
