OUGD406: SECRET 7 - Crit

Crit

I took all of my current work to the main crit session for this Studio Brief to gain opinions on which designs my coursemates thought had the most potential and how I should push these ideas forward into final designs.

Butterfly Designs - People liked the illusion the use of butterfly wings created, as many said they were very unsure as to what was creating the pattern untill they were prompted. This could be an interesting factor to my work, however might not prove effective if noone can make the link. The use of John Lennon's eye was effective and the majority of people preferred the red version I produced, saying it brought a collage style to the table.

Glitch - I had mixed responses on the glitch designs as similar to me, people felt they were too busy and quite unrelatable to a John Lennon track. The one which incorporates imagery within was most positively commented on, with people saying it was very vibrant and eye catching, and the curiosity created by the 'if only' made them want to know more about it. There were some suggestions to a change in type for this, however once I had justified that it was to contextualise the modern era onto the malfunctioned world people accepted that this was my choice of type style.

Eye Designs - Overall, I think I will leave behind the eye designs as they did not propose a real enough feel to be featured on an album art. People preferred the versions which attempted to be more real with blended layers and distortion to fit the shape of the eye and I even got a suggestion to create one large gif out of it and propose a moving digital cover, however this would not be sufficient for the brief as it will finally be exhibited as a physical print out.

Marbling - People said the majority of my marbling patterns were very professional and could be linked to the works of designers such as Leif Podhajsky. I do want to push this much further however and someone suggested to look at the designer Samuel Johnson to encourage my use of geometric shapes and more complex mirroring techniques. People were keen on the geometric i pattern that i merged together with the psychedelic paterns but only when the contrast of the lines was correctly adjusted to the correct background. Otherwise they appear much to busy and unclear of what it is trying to be. Everyone loved the maze concept of getting lost in imagination, and overall it was suggested that I just needed to simplify my designs and bring them back to their essence. This brought me to considering only using the i maze on its with no pattern and then maybe experimenting this with type.

I did ask people particularly if I should go back and explore the photographic mirroring which I originally stated I would try, but I have decided it is a strong idea that I will save as I already have enough to go on for this brief!

Overall, I aim to focus on the psychedelic patterns on their own and look at how I can make the i's contrast better. I want to push some type experimentation on the stripped back i maze design. Also I want to push the surrealist concept but merge it with the patterning and type. Then look at Samuel Johnson and how I can take inspiration from him on my final psychedelic designs!
