Looking at the stripped back design I had already created it did appear out of context with the diagonally split background, this not having any real reason behind it I did remove it and go for a solid one colour background. I added 'Leeds Pounds' into the design and played with how I could balance the white and black out on the coloured background when it came to screenprinting them. The white sections of the linear shadow appeared much more distinct now with a contrasting background especially partnered with the white 'Leeds Pounds' above and the all white shadow at the bottom. I felt these designs were the most stripped back but offered a completely new view on bank note design, it is something simple but does what it needs to do!
I decided as an initial experiment to ease myself into screen-printing (as it is my first proper go at it) I would have a go at actually producing these designs to get a feel for scale and how it would actually appear physically. As my prints have to fit within a 21cm x 26cm space for the exhibition, I will limit myself for each note to be 16-17cm x 8cm to ensure both will comfortably fit in the space provided for the exhibition. I did enjoy the process but am glad I had an initial go at it before settling on my final design as it was quite a tedious process which I had to have a couple goes at first, even through only using 3 colours!!
I was happy with my first attempt at screen-printing and got some really nice results. I think I do need to thicken out the black next time as it did fade slightly upon drying but overall I got the feel for it and feel confident with the process when producing my finals. I found when the ink got too boggy on the screen it was useful to pull a couple through on newsprint just as its thinner and mops up any excess that may flood through.
With my current designs I went back and asked people again for feedback on how I should push the designs further with regards to the process I have gone through. People suggested that I researched these playful geometric and linear patterns but never took them to CAD as I got carried away with the other designs. Using what I produced through stripping the designs back to the essence and truly focusing on playful approaches they suggested for me to start experimenting again with this and maybe try and build it into a bank note layout design which would be recognisable as a bank note (unlike the above) but still incorporating this playful and new approach.
