I carried out a quick print test on the basic printer in the studio. Because of its poor quality it did make it difficult to gather a proper representation of the small mag, this is because the double sided alignment is off so upon trimming I noticed the crop marks where not aligned on either side of the page. This made the cutting of each grey box (for the spiral binding - A VERY TEDIOUS PROCESS) very difficult and hard to align. This should not be a problem when I get it properly printed. Another problem was down to the thin weight of the paper causing rips when binding, again this should be slightly easier when I'm using my actual stock choices. Changing the spiral bind from 12.5mm was a good decision - it did make it more fiddly but it looks more in proportion with the amount of paper being used. I still have the option of using a 12.5 spiral if needs be.
Because of the problems caused trying to bind it I have decided I will print the editorial twice. I will attempt the spiral bind but if it goes wrong I will have a normally printed booklet version which I can saddle stitch as stated in my brief.
The print test highlighted to me how I needed to swap the margin in which the grey boxes were in for the back cover, as I forgot the page is flipped when shut...
