Now I have all the relevant context and imagery that I will be using within my small publication, I must begin mocking up the page layouts ready to move onto CAD. Focusing on how I will most efficiently and effectively display the necessary information, so it is both aesthetically pleasing but also functional to view and read.
As I will not be filling the publication with masses of text from articles, etc, grids will be used in a more loose way, in the sense that they will not need to follow on from eachother as precisely.
I will use the grids/guides on InDesign to help me plan the structure of each page and how the info will fit into it.
After going back over the many publication inspirations I had become a custom to when I was working towards the study tasks, I found I had developed a strong understanding of how I can plan and structure block images and text boxes onto a page through the use of grids. I am particularly fond of having the text boxes overlaying parts of the images and having them accordingly set, either centralled or off to the side. Then from this I will typeset the text to match the alignment to achieve a regular layout appearance. This example below that I found shows how the use of grids can allow a larger image to fill a page space, and then have the text box (still fitting within the more refined inside grid) positioned above it.
It is publication layouts such as the one above which I have taken great inspiration from when it comes to the layout design. Especially as my publication will be such small scale, it needs to fit the necessary information within whilst still being easily viewable and spread out.
I started with planning the contents page, realising I had four main page spreads with different headings for each. 4 being a nice regular number allowed me to easily experiment with how I would fit these into either a 4x4 grid or even 4x3 with them trailing vertically down the page; making the design of the pages that bit more interactive and aesthetically pleasing...
I did start to think about various ways I could present the intro page in relation to the grids but I didn't feel like I was making very strong progress with the variations...
At this point I could tell that grids would be varying slightly from page to page however not by much. I would be mainly dealing with 4x3, 3x3 & 3x4 dependant on the information that needed to be displayed and the number of patterns/images I aimed to use. With this knowledge I sketched numerous possible page layouts listing what would fit where, with regards to contents. Below are the final plans on paper of how they would look. Next I want to move onto InDesign and start adapting these page layouts into the more accurate grid forms. So I can start to see a proper digital concept of how it is going to appear...
