The inspiration for the front cover of my publication came from a poster design that I came across on instagram. It reads 'Life is Short' and I immediately saw this as a perfect opportunity to use as the title of the 'series' of publications. It perfectly reflects the concepts that figure and ground hold through the experimentation of placement of type and colour, so I briefly spoke to the guy about pinching the idea for this project. I took the concept and applied my own colour scheme to it and then adapted little aspects of it, such as the irregularities of type on the word 'short'. I simply aimed to cleverly communicate the various depths within figure/ground through the cover, and I feel this does it well with the 'L' being created and the overlapping of type due to colour.
I added the context into the cover, so it now reads: "LIFE IS SHORT Consider: Figure/Ground"
If I was to follow up on the publication with more guides, it is applicable to use again, e.g. Consider Colour Theory or Grids.
I think this works very well as a title and cover to a small publication inducting designers into the various designing principles they need to be aware of. Here is my first finished copy of what they cover will look like once printed (bare in mind, all cream will actually be white, but will be printed onto coloured stock)
The Stock I will be using will be a 120gsm creamy/yellow paper. Perfect for a little guide/publication, will be durable enough to hold together and not easily rip, but cheap enough for mass/batch production. I will experiment with the sturdiness of stapling the spine, however I am fond of using saddle stitches for publications and brochures so will most likely go ahead with this technqiue. The only down side to this is obviously the time it takes to individually sew each book, but for final printing it would be nice to see it properly bound together by a creamy coloured thread, rather than staples.
When printing however, I will test initially on white stock as well and I aim for the scale of the publication to be A6 so its very hand held and easy to pop in your bag/pocket for storage.
