I narrowed down to my final 3 which I would submit the live competition. I settled on contrasting borders for the first two.
As part of the submission I also had the chance to include a 140 character summary of the concept depicted in my work..
A visual insight into another mystical dimension, reflecting the furthest depths we can reach within ourselves.
Everyone may seem to be going one way, but your mind is capable of reversing that direction.
60s Psychedelia with a monochromatic slant. Bringing back the idea of us being able to think outside the box
Overall, I did actually really enjoy the more art side to this brief as I was really able to experiment with the different medias/contexts within my work whilst, in turn, tried to portray my ideas to the audience of the competition. As it was more of an art directed brief which revolved around your work remaining a 'secret' till the end, I didn't get to use much type but focused more on layout, colours and the form of my album sleeve in general to visually communicate moods and concepts. I did consider type where necessary but my final decision was to abandon any sort of prompt, other than visual, for people to build their own ideas around what my work was trying to portray.
In the early stages of research and idea generation I was able to come up with a broad range of concepts and ideas of how I was going to experiment with this brief so I feel I have satisfied the justifications behind my work. The good range of developmental ideas were able to eventually come together to strengthen concept ideas or even inspire new ones as I went along. As I made good use of feedback this is what prompted me to start pushing ideas further, through the combination of concepts or through researching a similar artist/designer to be inspired by. In one of my last crits where I was asking for ways to push my ideas further, this was where it was suggested for me to look at designer Samuel Johnson, which really influenced my project and my designs in a very positive experimental way. I am very keen on the visuals he produces and this did reflect onto my work in the restricted ways it could through not using typography, but it will definitely be carried forward into any other album art designing I may end up doing.
I was inspired by the love and peace shown by John Lennon and looked at ways in which I could communicate this through more modern, digitalised psychedelia, in turn, this inspired me to experiment with ink marbling. This was a process which I thoroughly enjoyed due to the fluid and vibrant response it produces, especially once scanned into Photoshop for further enhancements and manipulation.
I was able to produce responses to the tracks with deep, semiotic meanings/considerations within them which can reflect the tracks concepts in individual ways. I tried to build in ideas of being able to push deeper inside of yourself and being able to stand out to make change and feel confident in what you're doing. All of which can relate back to the initial ideologies which Lennon talks about as a 60s hippy.
Overall, I was extremely happy with my final responses which I submitted to Secret 7 however none of my designs did get picked I do look forward to participating next year with some new tracks and concepts to play with!
