Before I started digitalising ideas in Indesign I needed to consider the grids I'd follow, a grid effects readability, legibility along with figure / ground. I needed a consistent grid that enabled each page to have distinct differences yet remain persistent.
The initial guideline set up..
I did end up having to use two separate grids, one for the article opener spreads and one for everything else. This is because I didn't want to over-complicate for myself with over 7 columns on only a 7" long publication..
Grid 1: Here I used a regular 6x6 grid which was present in all main articles with text and images and also the contents page. It provided me with a centre line for the 2 columns of text in articles, but also 3 separate columns for the contents/intro page...
Grid 2: This grid was only used for the article opening title double page spreads. It was irregular to the other grid as it was a 7x5. I needed this to better centralise and place the titles and imagery, as I was more focused on enhancing the negative space, rather than managing articles worth of texts and images in a tight fitting. It also effectively fits a bottom right space used to label who the article was by and who the photography was by..
