Through my evaluation I wanted to firstly address the final crit session we had and the comments I received through that. I asked questions focusing on the colour scheme of my design, the choice of type and how the arrows fit into this, and then the overall effectiveness of my design and whether it satisfies my initial aims...
Colour Scheme: I received a lot of positive feedback regarding my choice of colour schemes, for example, the majority of people commented on how they preferred the darker, new rebrand colours as it hints at the old iconic red, whilst bringing a new, slick approach to the rebrand. People felt similarly to me that the old red was way too garish, but the toned down use as a feature colour balanced it well and kept it recognisable for the customers. Comments showed how the darker colour scheme did reflect the brand better and would entice the target market better, but it was also suggested how this could make the company appear as more exclusive and expensive thus de-attracting gamers. I understand how this could be assumed but competing companies such as GAME already have sleek, modern aesthetics and this is not necessarily the case with them. But it has to be said that if a company does invest in a face-lift and the quality of its brand identity improves, then an small increase in prices may be inevitable. It was clear people liked the fact I provided a version of the logotype for a black background and a version for a white background, this makes the design more applicable to many different medias and contexts. However one person did feel the black was a bit harsh and preferred the white version only, but gave no further justification to this. At one point I did state the black as providing a more mysterious outlook to the brand, but this was shot down quickly and considered invalid which is true.
Type: Everyone was very complimentary on the focus on type rather than the blocky shape and irregularities present in the old logo, I even received a comment off one person suggesting how it is a timeless design due to the simplicity and clean cut style used! This depicted by the sans serif font choice aiding the modern, clean look whilst being cold and attractive. I received a lot of suggestions regarding the placement of the arrow, such as leaving it on the ‘x’ to show how the company is progressing forward, however I deliberately moved it away from the ‘x’ to sway away from the original design. Other suggestions included adding a second arrow to balance it out and then more clearly communicate the ‘exchange’, but my response to this would be that the inspiration for using a single arrow creating something new and portrayed the recycling logo within the logotype. By adding a second arrow, it would have over-complicated the design and this was something I experimented with during developmental stages. A different outtake on the arrow design was suggested focusing on the negative space created between the ‘e’ and the ‘x’ as this in itself created an arrowhead shape. This definitely could be something I experiment with if I was to revisit the design however it would be a very subtle touch to the design that not many people would be aware of.
Overall: A very clean, simple and effective design especially when present on mockups. It meets my initial aims that I set out to achieve. From the crit someone requested a shopfront mockup...
