603 - Brief 04 - Evaluation

For Intern’s collaboration with Napapijri on the 5th-11th March 2018, I was required to provide video installations for three screens that would take centre stage in the exhibition space. In order to make the space relevant to Intern and represent what they do best, I produced three varying roll-over videos that showcased some of their brilliant photo driven editorial work.
Still images, with simple transitions gave the residency an art installation feel and showcased the great work of Intern's network of young collaborators.
In addition, four videos for the central screen were required, for these I made use of a subtle flag movement, created by an external 3d designer, to create a dynamic backdrop for the series of panel discussions - ensuring that the speakers are well lit, but not overshadowed by the title of the events and their names, displayed behind them.

By working closely with Alec throughout the whole process, we were able to efficiently produce the outputs in a considered manor - ensuring initial guidelines were met through them being simple yet striking, yet consistent with the brand of Intern. I think over the course of the live brief we effectively communicated with one and other, despite having to work remotely for the entirety - this taught me how to better my communication of ideas via e-mail as well as how I can quickly yet appropriately send visual options and mockups to aid decision-making.

Thus were able to create a final outcome we were both really happy with which then went on to looking very professional and impactful once installed into the actual space. Although it was striking and communicated content in the most clear and concise way, the outcomes did not distract from the various organised events and talks going on in the space - but simply complimented them and provided that interactive background and relevant link back to Intern’s identity and what it is they offer as a creative platform.

Being a live brief, it did give me a taste of what the pace of work will be like after uni when working with various external clients. For this particular project it was a very quick turn around for the work as we did need to provide the elements to Vice weeks before the actual event to get everything confirmed and tested before-hand. This is what working in industry will be like for me being a motion designer, and I think I handled this responsibility very well given the time restraints. For the future, the only thing I would say I need to consider and improve on to ensure I am meeting those deadlines - which naturally through this project I have learnt through practise - is considering render time. It has been a bit of a theme in projects this year that I under-estimate the time it actually takes to render various moving content but I think the more comfortable and experienced I have become with After Effects over the span of the year has helped me a lot already with this.

Getting to go and actually see my work at that large scale and infront of all those people was an incredible and quite humbling experience. It has truly given me a taste for the industry and allowed me to see clearly what kind of work I do want to be doing after uni. The exhibition was a great opportunity for me to do some networking too, which I took in my stride, and I enjoyed introducing myself as the guy who made the visuals!

Summarising Words from Alec:
Sam was a key part of the team during this project, producing all of the necessary graphics. Communication was very easy and he took direction well. Despite working remotely for the entire of the project and fitting the work around an existing full-time schedule, he delivered a series of excellent final products and was on hand when last minute alterations were required upon install. The space looked great and I wouldn’t think twice about working with him again.
