505 - 2 - Interim Pitch

With time constraints from my other project deadlines fast approaching, it was clear to me that after the presentation I did need to devise a rough time plan to keep my development steady alongside my other work and to ensure I leave enough time for feedback and development for PART 2 of the project!

I gathered my current research and also got some more fresh statistics and facts to strengthen my pitch. I also focused on my presentation skills - looking at how the slides would engage the audience with minimal text, mostly images/gifs to support what I am saying. How they can infer humour and tension supporting my point. How I can flow between slides and content to most effectively engage.

Here are my slides with the presenter notes I assigned to each slide (developed and up-written for blog)..

(ape to human to gamer gif)
I’m wanting to address how we’ve evolved as humans.

- but more specifically how we’re starting to evolve maybe in the wrong direction because of current advancements with technology.
- Our society has the tendency to rely on technology a little too much.
- I’m not saying I don’t support or love it
as this would be highly contradictory as it directly feeds so strongly into our practise as modern day graphic designers BUT…

.. It is way too noticeable how we all aimlessly go through our days with our heads down texting, checking Instagram, or scrolling through emails.
- People today would rather be ‘fake’ engaging with the digital platform; leaving likes and shallow comments rather than having a real conversation.
- Nobody really stops to think about how much they actually might be missing out on because this has become such a cultural normality.
It’s crazy to think back to before technology was so prevalent and remember all those little things we didn’t appreciate back then, as now we aren’t even able it appreciate anymore. These can include...

Going on holiday or on a trip without having to take, and edit the perfect picture!
- This is bIsraeli satirist and author Shahak Shapira who has created a website to show why such selfies are so distasteful.

He’s taken people’s selfies from Instagram, Tinder, Grindr and Facebook and used them to show how ridiculous the selfies would look if taken in the aftermath of the death camps.

Board games : theres even an app for Monopoly now!
(Which is really cool btw) BUT.....
How are we guna make family memories like this anymore? (fat guy flipping the table gif)
I used to love going to Blockbuster to rent movies on VCR for the weekend!

Kids aren't going get to experience that excitement
- I suppose now its excitement for the new Call of Duty map pack and double xp weekend!
You can't even enjoy the gigs you’ve paid stupid amounts to go to, because of a sea of hundreds of mobile phones blocking your view.
- Relatable to the rave nights I go to aswell, it's became to commercialised, people only do things to get a selfie for their Instagram account. Loss of passion.
Maybe we should all start putting in place rules like this!? (clubs who have started banning phones on the dancefloor!)

I understand the obsession with documenting all your memories to look back on as you grow old and just how efficient we are as a race now, and technology has come so far;
but I feel like people are more interested in showing off and creating their perfect online-self more than actually enjoying what is happening infront of them. They'd rather watch it through a screen.

I am a culprit of this, & in our postmodern society we are surrounded by the over-saturation of image.
Networking and getting your name out there is down to the amount of followers you have or the number of likes you get.

I DON’T want us to forget about all the other ways we can communicate, developing our social skills alongside technology - then we truly will become our most efficient selfs.

With people texting and communicating via social media rather than engaging in real face-to-face communication, what happens to our compassion and our ability to empathise?
EMPATHY - the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

We trick ourselves into believing that we are better connected… But are we?
People actually fish for online comments to boost their self-esteem - “OMG BAAAAABE, you look so nice” thats not real, give a real f*king compliment!

Research was taken from surveys on 14,000 college volunteers over the past 30 years.
The surveys asked simply, in various ways, how much somebody cared about the circumstance of others.

It is suggested that the our generation really isn’t as empathetic because we are simply more self-absorbed than previous ones.

It is believed that we are “one of the most self-centred, narcissistic, competitive, confident and individualistic in our recent history.”

Constant concern for ourselves, but less as much about others - for me this is directly because of our 24/7 media update society that has been created, we’re starting to become numb to the world.

I’M NOT trying to discourage the development of technology and efficiency, just reflect on how we can be more mindful simultaneously, as we are slowly becoming robots.
- so my aim is to re-enforce these little things that have been forgotten as to how we can be more interactive as a society.

Feedback:
- Strong issue to focus on, lots of scope for response
- Strong presenting skills, drew people in to my problem and spoke passionately, everyone in the group felt passionately and could identify with the points I was raising regarding how we have changed as a society - document these personal opinions.
- Need more primary and secondary research: to build that greater understanding and justifications to the response I end up exploring
- Think about as many approaches to the issue as I can
- Then I can focus on what the actual specific problem is and how I plan to resolve it appropriate for a specific audience (with a specific tone of voice) and then how this will be distributed and communicated with.
