505 - 1 - Sketching Ideas

Being directly inspired by the art on the lightboxes inside Headrow, I went about producing various poster responses and layouts which could incorporate them as the background/border. Keeping my overall design consistent to their already existing identity.

They are very linear based, creating contrast through black and white and then partnering it with that distinctive orange colour

A main focus of mine was to ensure I was stressing how it is a celebratory poster of this multi-use events space which has been added to Leeds. How it is more than just a bar, it offers various facilities and event spaces with different focus' making it appropriate for a very broad audience.
I took these designs into a feedback crit group to see which route people felt would best represent the existing style of Headrow - or if I should create something completely fresh?

I first looked at how I can consider the cutout design and how I could possibly focus on featuring the plants which feature in the decor and website of Headrow so much.
The layouts also being adaptable to other background ideas. The crit really liked the quite unique idea of cutting out paper to create the composition, however we questioned how it would be displayed - would I simply frame in the objects and flatten it to hold it still or just photograph the final outcome? - Does this breach being 'traditional'?!

Designing in more of an experimental way, I looked how similar to my research I could combine an image* with an overlaid coloured text box, which would introduce colour to the desaturated image - adding depth and opportunities for experimental type alignments.
*(image would have to be bitmapped - bitmapping translates the image into larger dots - gives an interesting effect and allows you to screenprint 2-tone images more accurately. Look into how you actually carry out this process as I am unsure!)

These designs will feel more appropriate for Headrows modernist design style, the crit group suggested how this has been done before and doesn't feel as distinctive. They suggested how I should maybe even consider something even more simplistic and straight-forward so I don't over complicate the composition - and stray from the minimal style associated with Headrow.
This is were started introduce bits of content such as 'Leeds' ultimate multi-purpose events space' - people were keen on this being the main piece of typography you are drawn to as the colour scheme and logo will make it instantly recognisable to Headrow..

More experimentation with how I can adapt the layout to fit both the image and text. Started to think about how I can allow the box-logo for Headrow to fit into the layout and actually inspire the type alignment like they do in their existing collateral.
People weren't as keen on 'Leeds' Top Spot' as it feels too vague, it was suggested how I should make it obvious what it is that Headrow offers which is so different to every other place in Leeds.

The crit lead me onto trying to be more minimal with how I was approaching the poster, being directly inspired by the light-box art, looking at how I can transfer that style into a border for the poster and then have the content clearly communicated within, like their simplistic box-logo, it creates a border for the aligned text within..
