502 - 2 - Technology Brief

Following my extensive research into the issue of how technology has changed us as a society, it is clear how we have become a generation addicted and reliant on our phones.
It was time to begin devising and developing my body of practical work that both distils my knowledge of how this can/is effecting us long-term. And this body of practical work will demonstrate my ability to tap into the market potential for socially, politically and ethically-driven design.

To deliver a most considered solution to the identified problem I saw it necessary to create a self initiated brief that would allow me consider media, communication, audience and function in more depth. Therefore I collated my research to this point to piece together a brief that I felt would be conceptually appropriate to gradually help the issues technology may be facing us with, one step at a time.

"I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots" - Albert Einstein.

Background

It is clear how we have become a global generation who are addicted and reliant on mobile phones and technology. My research has shown me how over-time this has impacted our ability to be empathetic and can also have impacts on our health - long term exposure to artificial blue light is bad for the eyes, production of melatonin and in-turn can cause bad sleeping habits.
However technology does plays a pivotal role in our fast evolving society and it would be contradictory for a digitally reliant graphic designer to attempt to even try and discourage it, especially through the digital design process gone through to get to the majority of my final outcomes.
So how can my response both educate people and draw in to these impacts caused by technology in the most suitable and effective way?
How can we rethink and redesign our future to ensure technology never surpasses human interaction?
And how can we ensure we become more open to the real-life opportunities that we could be missing out on outside of the digital platform

This, in turn, will never counter-act the advancements of technology, as we as humans are designed to keep moving forward and push boundaries, but simply act as a subtle reminder for people to not be brainwashed by the products and services they consume.

The challenge
The challenge is to make small steps towards breaking the habits of brainwashed and addicted social media scrollers, emotions-replaced-by-emoji users and fake-compliment seekers. Helping us to consider the effects actually at hand, and also allowing them in turn, to create and appreciate more times of empathy with friends and family.

Who is it for?

Is there a specific target audience that this is most applicable to?
Or can I approach it with the aim of making people more aware across the whole of the UK, or even globe?
This means the target audience will be broad. It is broad as all should consider the small steps they can take to tackle the issue created by users of technology in our society, across all generations.

What to consider
- What best represents the issues in our society? Most relatable?
- How to effectively communicate these in a way which the audience will consider - humour? seriousness?
- How graphic design outputs could actively make people more aware of the issues that have came with the over-saturation of technology
- How the developed idea response can be applied to a number of products in a range
- Can this be adaptable to an already existing organisation/charity?
