504 - Design for Screen - Crit Session

Following on from the work I have done I feel like it is time to have an interim crit session to check I am still going in the right direction with the visual identity of the scheme and that it fits alongside the plans for my app. Also focusing on how it will be most effectively solving my problem of reducing congestion and pollution in the city centre of Leeds and it is promoting a healthy active lifestyle within its quite broad target audience of students, locals and tourists.

Upon explaining the psychology behind my colour choices and then the whole approach of inferring motion and efficiency as well as being in a clean, modern design style - which reflects what I am trying to impact onto the city - people were very keen and loved the whole direction of it all!

The typeface was highlighted as being appropriate and it feels current which is essential for the identity to attract this new era of modern, artistic mindsets which make up Leeds.

The development of the little animation will bring the scheme to life and make it feel approachable and attractive to the target audience as it is stimulating - especially due to the personal touches such as the intro message about the current weather conditions, the male/female character customisation and the way it welcomes you by name!

The whole flow of the app was reported back to me as seeming to flow very smoothly and with a simple tutorial upon first use it would be very simple to use. It is very efficient in the way it processes your information and allows you to be in-control of your route and the chosen bike stations along the way, with easy to find live information about the bike stations showing you clearly how many bikes are available and how many spaces are there to park your bike at the end of the route. It was suggested to me however, I need to incorporate and actually show how the app will automatically alert you of with push notifications when bike stations become unavailable/available whilst cycling. As this would be problematic whilst cycling if you arrived and only then found out there is no space - and you are stuck with the problem of having to find a new station. By introducing a notification which will automatically do it for you it will make it much more efficient and a better experience for users, and I can also include how if it does happen towards the end of your route you will be granted extra free time to find a new station so your price is not increased.

It was also highlighted to me that in the wireframes the destination selection section needs to be clearer. There is no need to show the route until you have actually selected the bike drop-off stations which will be nearby your destination. This way (like the pick-up stations near your starting location) the map can be shown zoomed in to your final destination giving you a better view of the nearby stations that you can drop off at which are nearby your final destination.

I had very positive comments about combining the transport comparison concept into this app, as it gives the user other options if nothing else is available or simply if they want to test that the OnYerBike Scheme is most efficient for them! The inclusion of emitted emissions and calories burnt throughout subtly but very effectively reinforces this idea of becoming a greener and more healthy city!
