I took my two developing concepts to a crit session to get some feedback and see what opinions people had on them to start pushing them even further (or even merging them together perhaps?). I asked several questions to prompt discussion including..
Each approach's potential to solving the problem most effectively and smoothly?
How could features be developed within my app differently to those already out on the market?
Pointers and considerations?
There was some mixed opinions but once I had documented everything it did collate quite nicely helping me to pick out points I may not have already considered for the most effective route for development of the app, including refinements and ways I can build up both of them to make one super problem solver! - whilst still promoting the bike scheme
For transport comparison app
- If there was a proper comparison displayed in an efficient way people would consider their transport options and usage more actively (my argument here was there are these kinds of apps already out i.e. CityMapper, it's just no-one is inclined to use them/actually know they exist - need a way to develop them into something more worthwhile whilst still encouraging the green lifestyle!)
- "Students are lazy and often late, so would almost always opt for the easy option of a cab", but if this was recorded and showed the build up would it encourage them to change their ways?
- Can develop this sort of concept into encouraging the app/bike scheme - compare other methods of transport (calories burnt/time saved/emissions reduced) - have a pop-up for if all nearby bikes aren't available, then it comes up with next best options for you including walking, bus, taxi (this whole concept can become an extra service within the bike scheme app)
With the bike scheme
- You need to consider who will actually use these methods of travel around the city; a lot of people live outside the city, so would they use it? - questionnaire
- "Students tend to walk everywhere anyway"
- Loves the strong focus on promoting healthy living and cutting pollution/congestion through a fun, active approach - appeals to a community/sub-culture
- Would need to approach in a very clear and un-complicated way, especially for the map routes and other features - cycling can be dangerous (like driving) if not paying attention
- Introduce other services (like Uber have) to make it more of an interactive, memorable experience
- Include rewards for encouraging sharing the app with friends, rewards for using more environmentally friendly transport methods over others?
This followed onto a scheduled session with some of the lads from 'Only' giving us a chance to discuss our ideas again and get some more professional pointers..
- He recommended me to look at a scheme designed by HayDays for a bike scheme in
Oslo with quite a different visual approach
- The obvious one - Boris Bikes
- It was suggested that I approach it differently in the sense that you do pay for the amount of time you use more specifically - rather than a larger time slot - would be more attractive for skint students that way and eliminates factor of people having to rush to fit a larger time slot, it will just run over into a smaller one with less of a money difference for them - pays for the time you use as Leeds isn't a huge city centre if you can wizz around it on a bike!
- We discussed the concept of introducing rewards and loyalty - could even develop a bit of a game into it, similar to the PokemonGo! concept of having to travel to landmarks to receive rewards around the city - this could definitely be developed into an interesting campaign.
- For the application MockUps, the program Adobe XD (Experience Design) has been recommended to me - it is very simple, can import layouts straight from AI and then record the screen to display mockups for ads, etc.
