I started trying to develop structured designs making use of these patterns I have been inspired by. I quickly developed this onto a concept which would make use of the emojis off iPhones. They have become a very popular tool which everyone is familiar with, especially students. They can represent all kinds of emotions, events, feelings, etc so I thought they would be perfect with experimenting celebratory feelings (with the party popper&balloon emojis) and also more serious work related symbols aswell (pencil, cash, etc). I initially started stating here aswell how different type can be used alongside a colour scheme to communicate these different money types.
Trying to incorporate them into a pattern which will feature on part of the note design...
I moved onto CAD so I could start experimenting with a more accurate representation of line, colour and type..
I started with some basic layout representations making use of quite a pastel-y orange colour and some experimental 'playful' type.
I used a typeface with the intentions of being a serious serif typeface but then appears hand-drawn with loose squiggles filling the stem widths. I feel like this could represent both work and play, but am unsure whether it fits with this whole light, pastel-y approach that is going on.
I found a bolder type which again appears hand-rendered but has the potential of creating more of a contrast highlighting which note it is. I will experiment further here with different colours representing the work note and then play note, but I am just trying to get basic layout and structure ideas together..
More simplistic layout, but featuring first typeface...
I then began trying to incorporate my own versions of the emojis into the design. I would need to recreate them due to copyright but also to create a more simplistic, personalised version which could be more easily screen-printed, as the current emojis would be difficult to screen-print using a small amount of layers.
Straight away I knew the designs were lacking and are not strong enough representations of a student currency. It was a weak concept which would require numerous coloured layers to get a decent looking emoji for the popper pattern. I tried putting them into replicated patterns and even as one big one, but they did not look aesthetically pleasing or provide a strong enough response to the brief or my concept in my opinion.
