OUGD406: Exhibition Branding - 1st Presentation Feedback

Presentation Feedback

It didn't go too terribly and they did think our concept had potential but we didn't communicate it in the right way. But by airing our concept all together and then getting to hear outside opinions, straight away, it had already helped us to focus the concept and direct our development from their points made.

Firstly, the tutors told us to focus our idea more on how we are the elite club. They wanted us to be proud of the institution we are at and to celebrate it in order to advertise it, so rather than proposing the exhibition as the viewers coming and joining/being part of this elite group who gets exclusive invites and free booze; make it more about us and that the viewers of the exhibition are actually coming to view our work, the members of 'The Bankers Club' - making us the elite group of designers that you are coming to visit and celebrate. The concept needs to become a visual experience placing our work on the pedestal. I think we had got too lost in the concept and communicated in a way which wasn't actually focused on our work and what we have achieved, so this was our new aim!

Upon my discussion of luxury patterns it was suggested to try being inspired by the patterns the Bank House Building actually creates to make it more relatable, but the pattern I designed was over-looked due to the comments on the colour scheme we got. They agreed with the use of gold and cream but felt the brown used was way too dark and it reminded them of luxury chocolate packaging rather than an exhibition! They wanted me to lighten up and explore using a more expressive colour.

It was suggested to focus less on the advertisement of alcohol for the exhibition, as this is expected at an opening night and more on how the competition will work and maximise the feedback for ourselves. This encouraged us to make a competition out of the responses to our work as well, celebrating us again, rather than the viewers.
Calum discussed ideas of vinyl over the windows to depict a new location e.g. a classic view over Manhattan (something more relatable to banking and prestigiousness) but it was shot down again due to it taking away the sentiment for being a designer in Leeds and celebrating were we are from and what we are actually doing. Simon labelled it as us giving it too much of an American feel which was true, we had got too carried away with the visual concept we had lost what we were actually focusing on exhibiting. So this did really help us with our direction.

We gathered for a group meeting afterwards and identified with all the points made and how we aim to use that to go forward. We decided to redo the contract and write a fresh manifesto communicating our exact aims for the exhibition. We instated the roles we were set to be working on to ensure we developed the concept ready for the next presentation (the following week) ...
