OUGD404: Studio Brief 02 - Type

Type Experiments

I tried to narrow down my font list to typefaces which I thought could be the face of the magazine. I knew that I would need a bold, more distinctive typeface for the large quotes and article opener titles (1); and then I would need a type suitable for main body texts and also headers and footers (2).

First I tried an all caps type called Bebas Neue for 1. It provided a very distinctive hard-hitting feel to it which I could in-vision being used for headings but I am unsure whether it best represents the style I am going for for this editorial. For 2, I paired it with a very modernist sans-serif type called Biko, which I have used in projects before. It does go well with bebas due to its letterform consistency, however it doesn't give off a luxurious yet not too flash feel..

Next I tried a newly downloaded font, called Sensation. I used the bold version for 1, and light for 2. I can straight away rule this font out as it gives a futuristic feel which could be paired with techno, but it is too space age for my liking..

Next I sampled another modernist sans-serif type called Young, it does give a minimal lifestyle mag feel but I want to experiment further with pairing it with something else for the main body text, as it is too condensed together for a double page spread..

I swapped the body text (2) to Biko again, seeing how it would pair with young as 1. As it is more spread out it does give a much better feel to it. Achieving that modern lifestyle mag feeling. But I want to try something with more character and edginess to it..

Lastly, I found a font similar to that used in my copy of Desillusion mag, upon first viewing it appears as consistent as a modern sans-serif typeface I have trialled before. But then you notice (especially on the heading) the slab serifs present. It does not make the text feel too blocky like some slab-serif fonts do. I feel like it represents the look I am going for, as and as it comes in a more condensed bold version for headings I think it is perfect for this editorial..
