Overall I am pleased with how my small publication has came out, I feel I have met the specifications of the brief by producing a small publication (booklet, leaflet, etc) that can communicate a key design principle to the reader. I have used appropriate vocabulary, punctuation and language in general to clearly communicate my chosen design principle (figure and ground) to my target audience. Being aimed at first year design students who are being inducted into the principles such as myself, I have made use of appropriate techniques to engage them, tested with my current course-mates. As well as that I have displayed an understanding of the other principles involved in designing publications such as colour theory, grids, canons, typesetting, folding and bookbinding techniques.
The overall style I used throughout my small publication is extremely aesthetically pleasing, effective and consistent. The use of a strict colour scheme demonstrates this through 4 different shades within the same spectrum, a light cream for the stock, an orange and brown used within the patterns and finally a darker brown which features as the type colour. This provides ultimate consistency especially through the use of the same typeface 'Biko Regular' as used previously in other projects. It offers a modern, sans serif look which is very legible, even at small scales which is essential due to the scale at which my publication is printed.
I feel printing it at A6 size was the most suitable scale for the publications intentions. As it is a simple introductory guide to a design principle it needs to be easily storable in a bag/pocket upon first picking it up and this also makes it very hand held and easy to navigate through pages.
My choice of stock was the right one, as mentioned before it fits the colour scheme perfectly but also offers a sturdy enough gsm weight to protect the pages of the publication. I think next time I would choose a slightly thicker paper weight for the outer covers to provide maximum protection as just from carrying it in my bag to and from the studio signs of wear have started to show. The paper quality allowed high quality printing however as I had to cut the paper down myself on a couple of the sheets I was out by just a mm, which had an impact when double side printing. It hasn't cause too much of an issue but has meant when I have bounded the spine double page spreads are not always perfectly aligned. This is something I will learn from when producing my larger editorial magazine.
I made use of a saddle stitch bookbinding technique to keep the publication together and this proved very efficient when up against a stapled version. It is much sturdier to hold and also holds the pages in a tighter formation.
I have learnt a lot about publication/editorial design through this first studio brief and feel it has better equipped me to complete the second brief within the module.
