OUGD405: Wayfinding - Entry Signage 2

Liberty Park Entry Signage Continued
21 / 01 / 16

Now that I have determined that I am placing the signage on the pillar in the main entrance, I've decided that a simple design incorporating pictograms in and around my map will provide the most effective introductionary system of my way-finding.

I sketched some basic layout designs but wanted to get on CAD asap to experiment in an easier way how it would look in terms of colour, layout and typography. This is where I really began to think about how I can represent the information i.e. Laundrette and Post Boxes through the use of quick and easy pictograms rather than taking up space with the whole word. I looked at popular designs for both and then also identified that the Bin Area and Bike Shed would require pictograms as well.. so I took the current designs and then adapted them with my own sketches on Photoshop/Illustrator for my own personal touch.

I was influenced by many pictorial designs which showed a consistent style and proved easy enough to use. And alot of research was done considering the different pictograms that could be used. More specifically in the study task 'Symbols' which you'll also find on here under 'OUGD405', 'Study Task 01' I was able to extend my practise through designing my own pictogram for a chosen event at the olympics. Here I did gain in the art of pictograms and how and when to use them, so I hope this is reflected in my designs for this project.
Here they are...

They will feature in the key of the map, on the map, on the entry signage and on the signage for the Bike Shed and Bin Area!

I went for a simple design which would effectively be recognised without prompt, so my way-finding can achieve this autonomous process of finding your way!

Now I had my pictograms ready, I could really start incorporating them into the layout of my design for entry signage, saving space by replacing the word with the pictogram.
Next step was to create the map...

In order to create the map, I used my taken picture of the plaque which is currently in the reception area...

In Illustrator I traced over it using the pen tool to create the brief guidelines for the accommodation grounds/buildings. This then allowed me to create a new updated version of the map, which aesthetically and functionally I could excel massively.
Taking the orange to represent the courtyard, and pink stripes for the buildings (from LL colour scheme) I was able to effectively represent how to get around Liberty Park as a newcomer, including all necessary facilities to get by!

Now all the separate parts were ready I was able to produce the Entry Signage which would be mounted on the first middle pillar in the reception room and create this mockup of it..

The design provides functionality through the easy to navigate layout, clearly showing the map in the top left corner and then pictograms and 'Reception' aligned with the simplistic arrow pointing you in the correct direction. I've limited it down to the use of only colours stated in the colour scheme to ensure the consistency between the system, and then the layout which incorporates the purple around the right hand-side edges will carry over into my designs for the other signage.

I didn't feel it was necessary now to have arrows pointing towards each block of flats as the map makes it clear which direction you need to head in.
