OUGD403 - Study Task 02

Symbol Design
16 / 10 / 15

Because we had such a short time to complete the designing process for this project, I feel my designs don't reflect my full potential.
I didn't know where to go with the initial designs so I began with simply recreating my favourite 3 sculptures in the park.

I began experimenting on Illustrator with as many different ways I could think of to present the sketches. My first design involved an element from one of the first set of sculptures in the park. I played with mounting the text on the centre piece for a long time, considering how it would work if it was hollow, and also how the text's perspective would appear due to the slant on the actual sculpture. The justification behind the final colouring was to fit the different colour schemes of the promotional material I collected whilst visiting the park. But I didn't get to chance to properly mount them on. Besides, in some testing I carried out on the logos I have found that a lot of the detail on the logo would be lost when being printed onto stationary at a smaller scale. So the logo isn't as functional as it could be.

The idea behind this set of designs is the focus on the three different shades used on the background and the text. This is meant to represent the three different points which make up the Yorkshire Sculpture triangle. I designed them in monochrome shades initially, however had the intentions of easily being able to change each shade to a colour if I needed to, but I wasn't happy with the designs so didn't push them any further in the time I had.

I got this far and decided to stick to the same concept but experiment with a more abstract design, making use of the Sol LeWitt sculpture. I liked the contrast of the sharp cube formation within the ellipses and I chose to present it with an option of a shadow inside it or not.

I got frustrated with my designs and decided to take a completely new approach. I liked this idea of having the logo not representing a specific sculpture in the park. And then experimented with trying to incorporate a macro of a leaf texture within the design, but I prefer the normal flat one.

I gathered a range of feedback on my presentation which included some mint comments about my work, but also really useful constructive ones aswell. Alot of people commented positively on the colour justifications and texture experimentation. They liked the abstract style that the leaf pattern created, but it was obvious that detail and effectiveness would be lost at a smaller scale and when present on other forms of media. So my received advice was to start sketching my ideas down more initially, before trying to play with it in CAD. This will take less time and I can be more fluid and sketchy with my initial ideas.
At the beginning of my presentation it was noted how displaying all my initial primary images gave everyone some context to see where my ideas have stemmed from, and the recognition of both nature and man-made sculpture was a good starting point for my work. I need to use my gathered stationary from YSP and start experimenting more with different scales, etc.
